Focus

I observed some human interactions this weekend that made me sad; people treating others to the point of breaking them down to tears, some intentional and some perhaps not. When we communicate we remember only 7% of spoken words, we recall 38% of the tone of voice used and the greatest impression is 55% of body language displayed! Remember that words can hurt as much as sticks and stones!

It is a good thing to be focused. And it is a bad thing to be so focused that you lose sight of what you are focused on and that everyone around becomes a blur. I believe that part of the enlightenment is the experience of the lessons in the journey. Allowing others to participate (and accepting that they will NOT do it the exact way you would AND may in fact achieve the desired results. And then maybe they won’t.), helping others grow and learn helps us grow and learn as well.

Happy Sunday

Now that worship has ended let the service begin. What a great way to be mindful of one of the reasons to gather in community; to be reminded that the lessons we should be learning-we should be sharing (and not with just each other on Sunday!) Happy Sunday…

Disposable Items

I have been typing, texting and leaving messages for some friends whom I have not spent time with for some time. They had not responded to any of the communications AND I kept sending them. I knew that they were being received and read. I got an note from them confirming that. Sometimes our friends and family are in different places in life than we are. Don’t ever forget, give up or stop loving them.

Razors, plastic bags, diapers, cameras are all examples of disposable items. People and relationships are not disposable, well, at least they should not be. How many times has something happened between you and another person and either you or the other person “quit” the relationship? Regardless if it is a neighbor, family, friends, co-worker, or…

In the service industry there is a saying that “it takes years to win a customer and only seconds to lose one.” Unfortunately we are a society that values temporary relationships (get what you need/want, quick gratification, and often place little or no value on long standing commitment, loyalty and value in building and growing with one another.

Running or quitting will not solve the issue at hand. It may relieve you have having to “deal” with it AND it will happen again with different people. You must forge your way through the wall despite how difficult it is. The reward will be greater than you can ever imagine.

The First Time

TS Eliot wrote “We must not cease from exploration; the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time.” Sometimes we can be somewhere over and over and then when we allow ourselves to breathe, see, hear, feel, taste… it IS like exploring it for the very first time. I can think of moments in my life like that too… Be Still And Know!

Difference

In this world, in our communities, in your life we must understand and know that DIFFERENCE is a cause for celebration, not a cause for violence or indifference. As Summer makes way for Fall it is time to prepare the ground for a change of season and prepare our hearts to learn, grow and love. How will you prepare yourself? What are you willing to accept?

Kindness

St. Francis of Assisi wrote “Wherever you go, preach. Use words of necessary.” How true that is regardless of our religious, spiritual or nonreligious beliefs! We need to live, breath, walk and talk the change that we seek for this world. Being intentional about life and love is something we all can do that requires nothing more than doing it…

Regardless if we are Christians, Islamic, Buddhists, Hindu, a religion not listed, spiritual, or nonreligious we all are connected as we are human beings, we have the ability to be connected by what some call light, energy, spirituality, life, or…

The Golden Rule is to treat others as you want would wish to be treated. Perhaps a 2011 spin on that would be perhaps we do not treat others in the same way, we ourselves, would not like to be treated.

It costs us nothing to smile, say hello, say thank you, to offer a hand, to open the door, to commit those uncommon, intentional acts of kindness. You know… those acts of kindness that are the right thing to do, not necessarily fun or easy!

I can be the change that I seek in this world… A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.

We know that up to 70% of the population in America does not attend worship on a regular basis, so we are here to provide care & services to everyone regardless of they attend worship or not. R R R

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle… three words that CAN make an impact if WE choose! Some in the US embrace the 3-R’s and some do not. Some companies need a lesson in the 3-R’s. In countries that are forced to do more with less, they may offer us all a lesson or two… Using drinking bottles filled with trash to make walls for schools, homes and other buildings! How do you embrace the 3-R’s?

When former Peace Corps volunteer Laura Kutner was asked to help find funding to finish constructing two classrooms in the elementary school where she worked in Guatemala, she decided to reuse common pieces of trash. She used what was known in environment-friendly circles as "eco-blocks" -- plastic bottles stuffed with inorganic trash -- and encased them in chicken wire. Once covered in a few layers of cement, the bottles provided cost-efficient and eco-friendly insulation for the classroom's walls.

"They stay cooler than traditionally built schools and have even inspired new community initiatives to find everyday solutions to trash management," Kutner said. "In development, if a community does not want it or does not need it, the project is not going to be successful," said Kutner. A community has to be able to invest in itself to be sustainable - and that, after all, should be the goal of grassroots development, she said.

I can be the change that I seek in this world… We won't have a planet if we destroy the environment with unnecessary necessities.

Thank Goodness it is Monday (TGIM)

I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself. What is your favorite spot at home? Favorite chair, room? Place on the deck or lawn? Beth and her wife Anita share living space in our home. Although we all live under the same roof, I emailed Beth a while back to say that “I missed her.” It seemed that we had more contact when they lived in another city than we were having living under the same roof.

Last week Beth and I made time to catch up with each other. For me, she is a mentor of sorts. A sister sometimes. A mother at times. An authentic, special and close friend always. I missed all the ways I felt by being plugged into her life. I sent her a text message today “I no longer miss you.” (she said she had to read it twice to get it.) That made me smile.

Commit to change the important things in your life. Today.

People

Every word has three definitions and three interpretations. How do we live together in a world of differences? So much depends on our ability to handle our conflicts; happiness at home, our performance at work, the livability of our communities, and, in this age, the survival of our species! Some say there is two sides to each story and the truth is in the middle. Perhaps the "third" side of conflict is love.

I am not the same person today that I was 20 years ago. There were times in my life that I didn't find displeasure in letting others know I have something they don't, I have something better than they do, I can do something they can't and if I helped them I let them know how much it cost to help them.

It does not take a rocket scientist or great mathematician to know that sometime soon, that behavior would “crash!” And it did! I got “hit” with a 2x4, kind of like Fred Sanford saying “hey you big dummy!” You have so much to offer, you were raised better than this, you WILL be the person you are destined to be!

People who didn’t look like me, smell like me, dress like me, acted like me, talked like me were no longer objects of labels, judgements or ridicule. They began to be questions to me. Who are you? Where did you come from? What is your life like? And many others.

I learned that those who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves. I can be the change that I seek in this world. One lesson, one experience and one moment in time.

I offer this following Sunday morning prayer/meditation “Define source of love, light and life we give thanks for the many life lessons that have been bestowed upon our life journeys. For those living in darkness let them have light to see where they walk. For those who walk without love let the light warm them to know love and for those who are lost on the journey let them know they are beautiful, loved and worthy and not alone.” Amen.

Saturday

Good morning friends, family and world. I was without computer yesterday, I missed you all! I hope all is well today for you and your family.

Speaking of family, last night I had an "ah-ha" moment. We invited 4 other couples for dinner. This was not a random you call come dinner, but 4 other specific couples were inivted for a reason. One couple is fairly new to the group. They are in a newly formed relationship. It is amazaing watching each of them grow and change, I am glad that they are a part of something so amazaing... relationship!

Speaking of relationship. I have spoke before about a "family of friends." I have friends all across this contienent. I also have people who although not related by blood we are related by everthing else that symbolizing a family unit.

The three remaining couples... One couple has almost reached their 1 year anniversary. Both learning, having fun and growing through some difficult life journeys. Before they left last night we had a converstion about some of all of that. We closed by sharing some heartfelt words and joining in prayer, for me it was most meaingful, authentic and healing. An other couple facinates me. They seem so uncomplicated dispite what ails them. I am in awe of their automatic ease in which they live their life. They seem to "stand" through any challenge and they keep smiling. I congratulate their life experience and am glad to call them family.

Speaking of challenge, the last couple. We stood up for them when they were married in church. It was one of the biggest honors I could have been given. We shared some challenges in the last year that didn't bring us together it actually allowed us to grow a part. At times I was just fine with that. As I continue to learn, experience and readust things make sense. As I get older, my mom gets smarter... LOL. These two people mean a great deal to me, and realized last night how much they loved me (us) AND that anything that kept us from being in right relationship with each other, was trivial, small, and insignificant. As I tried to explain some of this as they left I was choked up enough where I could not talk. I was given a known wink, look and hug. In that moment I felt love, gladness and family. Again. A lesson in love by family, with family and for family.

As we travel through our lifes journey, we will encounter hurdles, mountains (coming down and going up!), and a river or two. A few thing will get you through any of it. Compassion. Commitment. Communication. Prayer/Meidation. I know I add the last... family. Albert Einstein had this right... "Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life!"

Thursday

Maya Angelou (one of my hero’s) shared “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” At work. At home. In our communities. With family. With friends. With our beloved’s, we can allow ourselves to change; sometimes drastic and sometimes subtle. Do, however, allow yourself to be reflective, released, revived!

ACTS OF CHANGE

Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish; we can open our minds to new knowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish; we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed, "The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves." We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions. They need the truth. They need the whole truth. And they need nothing but the truth.

We should not allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives.

If you don't like how things are, change it! YOU (and you alone) are the author of your own life story! You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life - and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

You Can Be The Change You Seek In This World…

It is sometimes the small decisions that change your life, forever.

Wednesday

Life experiences; good, difficult and beautiful have helped me to understand how rich, deep and meaningful life is. I struggle not going on to worry about the “little” things that in the scope of life are of little or no importance.

The neighbor across the street frequently parks their vehicle in front of our home, on our side of the street. They normally do not park in the street but with the tires resting on or near the sidewalk, tearing up the ground and grass that would normally be there. I used to focus so much energy and time thinking of ways to prevent them from doing it. The one thought that didn’t come to mind right away was, simply ask. I forgot that not all neighbors are created equal, not everyone can read minds! Ask and you shall receive is a lesson that we often overlook.

You CAN Be The Change You Seek In This World…

Today I smile for my life, however imperfect or perfect it may or may not be.

I see picketers, and I think, if I weren't a loving, non-violent, spiritual person, I would over there, grab those signs, smash them over their heads and shove them up their…

As funny as that joke may be, do we not sometimes react like that what we see, hear, experience, and read today? Many have seen signs that contain hurtful, hateful, and untrue messages. What makes it more confusing is that sometimes these very signs are being held up by people who claim to be of a religious faith. Then you start to think, what is their purpose, who or what do they worship that leads them to promote those kinds of words?!

“Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.” Remember at all times that YOU are beautiful. YOU are loved. YOU are worthy. Just the way YOU are. You are never alone!

TGIM (Thank Goodness It's Monday!)

Say "Thank You" all the time. This is the remover of mountains, your thankful heart! Let us give thanks for a bounty of friends.

For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us that we've had them;

For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

For handsome friends who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn;

For plain friends, who, like potatoes, are so good for you;

For funny friends, who are as silly as Brussel Sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes;

For serious friends, as complex as cauliflowers and as intricate as onions;

For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini, and who, like parsnips, can be counted on to see you through the winter;

For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening time;

For young friends, growing as fast as radishes;

For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils and hold us, despite our blights, wilts and witherings;

And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past that have been harvested, but who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter; for this bounty of friends we give thanks.

PS: As the Midwest continues to fill sandbags, evacuate those living within miles of the Missouri River and shutting down electricity; I ask you to share hope, thoughts, and prayers to be with those who are affected, those who are helping and those who may be out of contact with family and friends. The river will be rising 1-2 feet each week in the next month.

Love, Truth, Life...

Mother Teresa reminded us that "There is a famine in America. Not a famine of food, but of love, of truth, of life." How do you define love? How do you define truth? How do you define life? Where, how and when do you learn them? In a time that up to 70% of the population does not attend worship on a regular basis where, how and who is American’s turning to for fellowship and a place to be in community?

In my experience as an Interfaith Chaplain many individuals and couples have shared with me that they are running from churches because they don’t want fire and brimstone. They don’t want to be a part of intolerance. They are hungry for a positive, inclusive message of love, life and truth. 75% of those whom I serve are heterosexual individuals and couples. These are their words! I would have expected that feedback and those feelings for those from the GLBT Community, I was surprised to realize how many heterosexuals feel the same way.

It is a call for all leaders of faith to take note that there is much to be learned in the “bed side” manner that we provide. Fire and brimstone are out! Realistic-positive messages are in. intolerance is out! Open, affirming and inclusive is in. Most say that one thing is preached or taught yet they experience just the opposite.

In a recent survey, less than 18 percent of Americans say the church is the friendliest place in town (thechristianpost.com) The some 750 surveyed Americans, 500 of whom were Christian, said the most important factor that makes a place friendly is "making me feel like I belong." Subsequent factors include "making me feel comfortable" and "at ease," conversation, smiles and being non-judgmental.

In another notable finding, ministers or religious leaders are ranked fifth on the friendliest people in town list. Most surveyed Americans named "a close friend" and "family member" as the friendliest person. Meanwhile, ministers were ranked behind neighbors and co-workers.

Regardless of your belief, everyone should have access to a place of worship that you feel welcomed, honored, accepted, and valued.

We know that not everyone has the exact same belief, we know that everyone will question components of a specific doctrine or dogma. It is important to make space for people to ask questions, challenge, and freedom to choose how they choose to worship, what they choose as their truth. It is then and only then will you have created space for everyone to be at the table, truly!

I offer this prayer “Heavenly Parent, Heavenly Father, Guardian Spirits, Mother and Father Earth, God of Love, God of Hope, God of Life, God of Light we ask for gifts of peace, love, and tolerance. Let us have life by living by the truths that each person comes to know. Through that let our love shine for one another as you offer in your many teachings. As it was, is now and forever shall be. Amen.”

Who can individuals, couples and families turn to when they need care & services traditionally found by a place of worship? US! We are Inclusive Life, and we serve all without exception. We know that up to 70% of the population in America does not attend worship on a regular basis, so we are here to provide care & services to everyone regardless of they attend worship or not.
