Quotes

Good morning world! On this eve of a new year I send greetings of joy, wishes of a prosperous new year and a challenge for each person. A challenge to make time to reflect upon your last year and the lessons you learned well and the ones you still are in pursuit of!

Ralph Waldo Emerson shared with us “Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.”

What are you standing in the way of in your own life?

What is blocking your sunshine?

Life and Light

The podcast today will be about life and light. Good Monday morning!

It was Plato that said “A sensible man will remember that the eyes may be confused in two ways: by a change from light to darkness or from darkness to light; and he will recognize that the same thing happens to the soul.”

I add “It is safe to assume that you’ve allowed God to be created in your image, as God dislikes the same people you do.”

Another Way To Look At It

Happy Sunday everyone!

Faith acts promptly and boldly on the on the occasion, on slender evidence.
Moving in faith takes a joyful heart and a willingness to surrender certainty.
Those leaps bring us to a new level of living, thinking, loving and experience.

Faith is the ability to hold on to things your reason once accepted, despite your changing moods.

I offer this prayer to those who are open to receiving it "Heavenly Parent of love and forgiveness thank you for the blessings we continue to receive.  We seek continued blessings and grace for our families, friends and those whom we have not met.  Keep them safe, secure and healthy and free from hurt harm and danger.  In your precious name we pray, amen"

Mini-Documentary on Homelessness by Hawaiian Seventh Graders Wins CCHD Contest

USCCB News Release

10-235
December 10, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mini-Documentary on Homelessness by Hawaiian Seventh Graders Wins 2010 CCHD Multi-Media Art Contest

WASHINGTON (December 10, 2010)—A mini-documentary on homelessness by the seventh grade religious education class at St. John Vianney Catholic School in Kailua, Hawaii, won the grand prize of the 2010 Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest sponsored by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the anti-poverty program of the U.S. bishops. The prize is being given today at the National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry in New Orleans. Around 2,500 youth ministers will be attending the conference.

The submission, entitled “Family of Promise,” was produced by religious education students who researched the growing number of homeless people in Hawaii and the U.S. and then conducted interviews, wrote a script, shot and edited the video. The mini-documentary also profiles the Family Promise program in Hawaii, in which families volunteer to host homeless families a week at a time as they work to address the factors that have contributed to their homelessness. The video can be found online at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEkbZfODEwc

“This video reflects the reality that homelessness really can happen to anyone,” said Ralph McCloud, director of CCHD for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). “The students involved initially thought homeless people were alcoholics and drug addicts but, after interacting with homeless families, found compassion and understanding. They learned about the causes of homelessness and how people can combat these causes. This greatly reflects the mission of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.”

The seventh grade students who produced the video were Maeve Gareghty, Christina Hill, Mia Hussey Kozlowski, Bailey Kahawai-Welch, Mark Kelley, Noah Kiakona, Shea Martinez, Jordan Johnson and Kolby Kahahawai.

Second place prizes in grades 10-12 and 7-9, respectively, go to Nina Fredericks, 12th grade, Father Ryan High School, Nashville, Tennessee, and Anthony J. Rojas and Maria P. Rojas, eighth grade, St. Andrew Catholic School, Orlando, Florida. Third place prizes go to Nicholas Guelda, 12th grade, St. Xavier High School, Louisville, Kentucky, and Gwyneth Sise, seventh grade, St. Mary’s Institute, Amsterdam, New York. Honorable mention goes to Paige Lysaght, 12th grade, Notre Dame Academy, Toledo, Ohio.

CCHD developed the Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest in 2001 to help schools and parishes engage youth in learning about low-income people in the U.S. who are addressing the root causes of poverty. It is open to students in grades 7-12 in Catholic parishes and schools. This year, students were asked to work from the theme, “Empowering Communities, Uprooting Poverty,” through visual arts, audio-visual means or literature. Original works were submitted to diocesan-level competitions. Local winners were forwarded to Washington for final judging.

CCHD is the domestic anti-poverty and social justice program of the Catholic bishops in the United States. With the support of Catholic parishioners, it has provided grants to more than 4,000 community and economic development projects over the past 40 years. The annual CCHD collection is taken up in most Catholic parishes in the United States on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

"The here and now is significant, not because of its bridge between the past and future, but by reason of what this very moment contains.  It may contain the "food" for our "hunger" if we are able to receive it.  I will rest into this moment of right now.

Ending Homelessness is not a Leap of Faith

By Rev. Fong, Rev. Cox & Rabbi Klein at Poverty Insights:

Just a few years ago, you could buy a home with no down payment and very little income documentation.

With the fallout of the mortgage meltdown that led to today’s devastating economy, it is getting harder and harder to accomplish the American Dream of homeownership; you practically have to sell off your first born and prove job security for the next decade before you can walk across the threshold of a new home.

The thousands of people living on the streets of Los Angeles, however, can hardly fathom the dream of owning their own home; they just want to escape the nightmare of life on the streets.

Rather than fighting bureaucratic barriers to buying a home, homeless persons encounter other struggles — the demons of mental illness, self medication through alcohol, or the difficulty of finding a living wage job in the middle of this tragic economy.

Solid economics is the basis for the new Los Angeles homeless plan designed by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, called, “Home For Good.”

A Smart Solution

The plan is just plain smart. Putting people into permanent homes saves society money in the long run. Caring for homeless persons through shelters, emergency room medical care, and soup kitchens is a costly short-term, albeit compassionate, solution. Studies show that a permanent home is a more cost effective answer.

Emphasizing the most hurting people on our streets is a compassionate approach. We see chronically homeless persons all over our region. We all know of that homeless man or woman sitting in the same spot day after day outside of our work or home. They sometimes converse with phantom people, and appear to be barely surviving. They, along with the thousands of homeless families and youth, certainly deserve a home.

As leaders of the Our Faith Matters initiative, a group of more than 80 congregations representing more than 500,000 congregants who are committed to ending homelessness, we endorse this plan to end homelessness in Los Angeles.

We are supporters, not just because it is a smart economic response, but because every human being is created in the divine image and should have the opportunity to live with basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare.

Whether society is saving money or not, we are called to protect and care for humanity, our neighbors. We are obligated as people of faith who have at heart a common belief that our Creator asks us to love one another, care for those in need, and to work for justice for everyone.

A Just Solution

Ron was 60 years old and had been living on the streets of Long Beach for 38 years, before a group of community members, including people of faith, helped him move into an apartment linked with support services. When he first entered his new apartment, he didn’t even know how to use a key to unlock the door.

A year later, Ron is still in his apartment and is successfully living a housed life. Even though for decades society had given up on him, Ron overcame homelessness through housing.

It was certainly a smart decision to move him into an apartment. His visits to the emergency rooms and his nomadic life in and out of the shelter system were costly.

But economics was not the real motive behind housing Ron. It is just not right for our society to permit a 60 year old man, struggling with health issues, to live on the streets. In fact, it is wrong to allow 50,000 people like Ron to struggle to survive on the streets in our region.

A plan to end homelessness in Los Angeles is a roadmap that this region desperately needs. We all know the solution is housing. And with thousands of people in need of a home, the price tag is steep.

Putting economics aside, our entrenched political systems will struggle with raising the capital, or even diverting existing resources, to house our hurting citizens. The motivation for making tough political decisions, like spending more tax payers’ money on housing, cannot be solely based on society saving money.

The real reason to house homeless persons is because housing everyone is an act of justice.

As faith leaders, we believe all human beings have inherent worth and deserve a place to call home. A housing policy that honors people as unique creations of God is vital to a functional, meaningful, and just society.

To that end, ending homelessness is no leap of faith. It can happen in our lifetime.

The Message

Good morning and Happy Sunday everyone!

Romans 13:11-14 (King James Version)

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

One can interpret this passage for different meanings.  At the time, it was probably written for those just as it is written, asking them to snap out of their night of drinking, orgies and other lustful behaviors.  Today perhaps it needs a different context.

We spend so much time working, living and trying to make ends meet to we really take time to think about spirituality, religion, faith, the scared, God, or other path you choose to live by?

To you make space and time to soak and immerse yourself in all you can, readings, community, prayer, meditation, lessons, practicing to allow yourself to grow, be challenged, ask questions, learn, share, give, take away…

Or do you attend worship once a week, give thanks and "leave worship" behind and get on with "normal" life without folding the principles, lessons, experiences you just had into that "normal" life.  Do you just go and hear some good music and few good words and feel good about having a good hour of time.  Now that worship has ended let the service begin is a way that a pastor friend of mine ends all of his services.  What a great message don't you think?

Sometimes, in our dark, lost, down and out phases of life we often forget to run towards light, friends, comfort for we get embarrassed, ashamed, uncomfortable letting others know of our failures, secrets, messy life.  And then often times we spiral into darkness, aloneness, leave me aloneness.  All along the lessons we have learned, the life we can have, the family we have can provide light, love, acceptance, forgiveness, wholeness, and help.

When you commit to learning and living a life according to the path you have chosen, you must commit to it full time, not part time or when it is convenient for you.  It is about striving to live a good life, being a good person and sharing that spirit with one another once a day, every day all day long.  Not just on the day of worship.

Now that worship has ended, let the service begin…
